The Allure of Bath Bombs: History, Benefits, and Ingredients

Bath bombs have transformed the simple act of bathing into a luxurious experience. These effervescent spheres, known for their vibrant colours and delightful scents, offer relaxation and a range of therapeutic benefits. At Yarra Naturals, our bath bombs are crafted with care, ensuring an indulgent experience every time.

A Brief History

The modern bath bomb was invented in 1989 by Mo Constantine, co-founder of Lush Cosmetics. Inspired by the fizz of Alka-Seltzer tablets, she created a product that dissolved in water, releasing fragrances and skin-softening agents. Over time, bath bombs have gained immense popularity, becoming a staple in home spa treatments.

Ingredients and Their Purpose

  1. Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda): A key ingredient in Yarra Naturals bath bombs, sodium bicarbonate helps to soften water, making it gentle on the skin. It also acts as a natural cleanser and exfoliant, helping to remove impurities and dead skin cells.
  2. Citric Acid: Combined with baking soda, citric acid creates a fizzing reaction. This ingredient also has astringent properties (meaning it tightens the skin, shrinks pores, and removes oil) a, which help to balance skin pH and leave it feeling refreshed.
  3. Essential Oils: At Yarra Naturals, we use only pure essential oils for scent and therapeutic benefits. Each oil offers unique properties. Here are just a few:
  • Lemon Myrtle: Known for its uplifting and refreshing scent, lemon myrtle has antimicrobial properties, making it beneficial for cleansing the skin.
  • Orange: Orange essential oil is invigorating and mood-boosting. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the skin.
  • Lavender: Renowned for its calming effects, lavender essential oil helps to reduce stress and promote relaxation, making it perfect for a bedtime bath.

Baking soda baths are the go-to for their numerous benefits. Including:

  • Skin Softening: Baking soda helps to soften the skin, making it smoother and more supple.
  • Detoxification: It can aid in drawing out toxins from the body, helping you feel refreshed and rejuvenated.
  • pH Balancing: Baking soda helps to balance the skin’s pH, which can alleviate irritation and reduce inflammation.
  • Relief from Itchiness: Its soothing properties can provide relief from itching and irritation, making it a good choice for those with sensitive skin.
  • Heck, they are just so gosh darn fun too!

At Yarra Naturals we love making bath bombs and are always working on new essential oil scent combinations, different clays, natural additives and anything to make the perfect combination. This week we added to our range a Lemon Myrtle & Bergamot bath bomb with jasmine, rose and blue cornflower petals.
